Leonard Porter Studio was commissioned by St. Mary Catholic Church in Norwalk, CT, (The Reverend Greg J. Markey, Pastor) to paint a large altarpiece as part of an inerior renovation project designed by Duncan G. Stroik Architect, LLC. The project features decorative painting by John Canning & Co. LTD.
The 13.5 x 7 foot altarpiece in oil depicts the assumption of the Virgin with the twelve apostles and angels. The finished painting was installed within a 27 foot reredos built on the existing altar.
The image follows apocryphal legend concerning the Assumption of the Virgin as well as Western painting precedent. The Virgin is seen being taken up into Heaven with the twelve apostles surrounding her tomb. They marvel at the flowers left behind in her sarcophagus and the portent of her miraculous assumption.
In addition to the completed painting, numerous preparatory works were created as part of the project, including a 3/16th scale modello in oil and many other drawings and sketches.
